The third-floor corridor sags beneath years of neglect, warped carpet swallowing footfalls while the ceiling above blooms with spreading water stains that branch like dark veins through sagging plaster. A lone emergency light flickers at irregular intervals, bathing the hallway in uneven pulses of amber that stretch shadows long and skeletal before snapping them back into place.
Midway down the hall, Room 312 waits behind a swollen wooden frame distorted by damp and time. Voices seep through the thin barrier in strained fragments, one sharp with rising panic, another breaking under pressure, the words indistinct but urgent. A metallic scrape drags across tile inside, followed by a heavy impact that shudders through the door and shakes a faint rain of plaster dust from the ceiling above.
Through thermal optics, five heat signatures glow beyond the wood. Three move erratically, pacing in tight, agitated patterns, while two remain lower and close together near the room’s center, their proximity suggesting restraint or protection. The rest of the floor remains silent and cold, no alarms sounding, no footsteps answering the disturbance.
Along the hinge side of the door, the stack settles into position with disciplined precision, weapons held steady as breathing falls into a controlled rhythm, tension drawn taut in the narrow corridor as if the building itself were holding its breath alongside them.
Hayes holds his rifle steady along the seam of the door, cheek pressed lightly to the stock as he angles for the narrowest possible slice of entry. His breathing remains slow and controlled, voice carrying low and even across the comms without breaking the stillness of the stack.
"Bathroom’s rear-left, alley-facing window," he murmurs, eyes flicking briefly to the building’s exterior layout in his mind. "If someone bolts, that’s your escape vector."
He shifts his stance by inches, adjusting his angle to account for potential crossfire as the heat signatures shift inside.
"Civilians are clustered central. Panic’s going to scatter them the second we breach, which means our lanes collapse fast if we’re not disciplined."
There’s a brief pause, not hesitation but calculation, as the weight of timing settles in the tight corridor.
"Your call."
Vance drops to a knee at the lock, movements economical and deliberate as he seats the charge against the warped frame. His gloved fingers work with practiced precision, securing the placement while faint tremors from inside the room ripple across his visor in distorted reflections.
"Charge is set," he reports quietly over comms, giving the frame one final check to confirm the hinge orientation and blast direction. "Controlled collapse. Door will swing inward."
Alvarez anchors rear security, rifle held low but steady as he monitors the corridor behind them, medical pack cinched tight across his shoulders. His visor flickers briefly as he toggles thermal overlays, isolating the clustered signatures inside the room and watching their erratic shifts.
"Two civilians are spiking on heat stress," he reports in a controlled undertone, keeping his muzzle disciplined down the hall. "One’s irregular. Could already be injured."
The breaching charge detonates with a sharp, concussive crack that punches the door inward in a storm of splintered wood and dust, the blast wave still rolling through the threshold when the flashbang follows, erupting in a violent bloom of white light and crushing pressure that devours the room in a roaring surge of disorientation.
Shouts collide with the fading echo of the blast as a handgun fires blindly through the haze, rounds chewing into overhead piping and rupturing an aging sprinkler line that bursts apart in a crashing torrent of icy water. Within seconds the room is drowning in spray and drifting smoke, steam coiling through the air as it thickens into a suffocating fog that swallows shapes and distorts movement.
Through the chaos, one hostile stumbles near the shattered doorway, half-blind and off balance, his weapon slipping in his grip as water slicks the floor beneath him. Across the room another man wrenches a civilian upright, forearm cinched tight against the hostage’s throat while he pivots to use the trembling body as living cover. Near the bathroom threshold, a broader silhouette turns with alarming speed, the compact profile of a submachine gun rising into position, muzzle tracking for suppressive fire through the haze.
Furniture skids violently across soaked tile as bodies scramble for footing, civilians screaming over the relentless hiss of water and the crack of gunfire, the confined space tipping fully into chaos with only fractions of a second separating control from catastrophe.
Hayes pivots through the rolling haze, rifle cutting across the room as he clears past the staggered hostile near the threshold and snaps onto the central threat using a civilian as cover, his sight picture tightening despite the spray and drifting steam.
"Center hostile, human shield!" he barks over the gunfire, shifting a half step to preserve his lane as water slicks beneath his boots.
Movement flashes at the edge of his vision near the bathroom door, the heavier silhouette bringing a weapon up through the smoke.
"Rear contact arming, bathroom flank!"
